Whether you use a MacBook for work, study, or everyday tasks, keeping track of its charging status is crucial for smooth and uninterrupted use. A Mac that isn’t charging properly can lead to unexpected shutdowns, data loss, and even long-term battery damage. Yet many users are often unsure how to confirm if their Mac is actually charging — especially with the range of changes Apple has introduced over the years, from the classic MagSafe connectors to modern USB-C ports and advanced battery optimization features.

Apple devices are designed to give clear signals when they receive power, but these indicators vary depending on your Mac model, macOS version, and even the type of charger you’re using. Sometimes your Mac may show “Not Charging” even when it’s plugged in, and in other cases, it may charge slowly due to low-wattage adapters or background processes. Understanding these signs helps you not only verify whether your Mac is charging but also take better care of your battery health and avoid common charging issues.

In this guide, you’ll learn about all the reliable ways to check your Mac’s charging status — from simple visual cues on your screen to hardware indicators, battery settings, and even advanced tools like Terminal commands.

1. Check the Charging Icon on the Menu Bar

The battery icon in the macOS menu bar is the fastest way to confirm charging.

What the Icons Mean

  • Lightning Bolt Symbol (⚡)
Indicates that your Mac is charging. This appears as:
    • A lightning bolt inside the battery icon
    • Or beside it when charging is optimized or limited temporarily.
  • Battery Percentage Increasing
Turn on percentage display to monitor charging progress:
System Settings → Control Center → Battery → Show Percentage
  • Plug Icon (🔌)
On some older models, this means the battery is fully charged and the Mac is running on AC power.

When to Use This Method

Useful when you want a quick confirmation without checking any hardware indicators.

2. Look for MagSafe or USB-C Adapter Signals

Depending on your Mac model, your charging port can give you a clear physical indication.

MagSafe (MacBooks 2006–2017 and 2021–present)

MagSafe connectors have a built-in LED that shows charging status:

  • Amber/Orange Light – Your Mac is charging.
  • Green Light – Battery is fully charged or charging is complete.

USB-C Charging (2016–present MacBooks)

USB-C ports do not have LED indicators, but signs include:

  • Adapter warming slightly (normal)
  • USB-C cable showing a light (only on certain third-party cables)

Tip: Always use Apple-certified chargers to maintain battery health and safety.

3. Check Your Mac’s Battery Status in System Settings

macOS offers detailed battery information.

How to Check

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Battery
  3. Look at the top where it shows battery status and whether it’s charging.

You may see any of the following:

  • “Charging” – Mac is receiving power normally.
  • “Not Charging” – Mac is connected to power but not charging due to:
    • High temperature
    • Battery optimization
    • Low-wattage charger
  • “Power Source: Power Adapter” – Mac is powered by charger, battery percentage may remain stable if full.

4. Use the Battery Menu in Control Center

macOS Control Center provides quick charging information:

Steps

  1. Click the Control Center icon (top right).
  2. Select Battery.

You’ll see whether the computer is:

  • Charging
  • Fully charged
  • Running on battery
  • Undergoing Optimized Battery Charging

This also helps you monitor apps using significant battery power.

5. Check the Indicator on the Charger (If Applicable)

Some Apple chargers and third-party chargers include built-in LEDs.

Apple’s MagSafe Power Adapter Light

  • Amber – Charging
  • Green – Fully charged

Third-Party USB-C Chargers

Some include:

  • LED ring lights
  • Color-changing indicators
These can help verify power delivery.

Always verify third-party accessories for safety certifications.

6. Terminal Command for Advanced Users (Optional)

This gives detailed charging information but is only needed if you want technical insights.

Command

pmset -g batt

What It Shows

  • Charging/discharging status
  • Battery percentage
  • Power source
  • Cycle count

Example output:

Now drawing from ‘AC Power’

 -InternalBattery: 75%; Charging

7. Check for Charging Issues (If Your Mac Doesn’t Charge)

If your Mac does not show any of the above signs:

Possible Problems

  • Faulty charging cable or adapter
  • Dirty USB-C or MagSafe port
  • macOS battery optimization preventing charging
  • Overheating (charging stops when the Mac is too warm)
  • Low wattage charger connected
  • Faulty battery (older Macs)

Quick Fixes

  • Try another port
  • Use an official or high-wattage charger
  • Restart your Mac
  • Clean the charging port gently
  • Reset SMC (for older Intel Macs)

Conclusion

Apple provides multiple ways to check if your Mac is charging—through the menu bar, System Settings, MagSafe indicators, charger LEDs, or even advanced Terminal commands. Understanding these signals ensures your Mac stays powered, your battery remains healthy, and you avoid unexpected power interruptions.

If your Mac doesn’t seem to charge even after checking these indicators, try basic troubleshooting or visit an Apple Support Center for a battery assessment.
